We’ve been experimenting with a tool designed to complement the µTorrent UI, and save time by automating repetitive tasks. With apologies to shortcut-haters everywhere, we’d like to introduce BTC.

BTC is a command line tool to control µTorrent. If you’re a fan of command lines, this is a tool for you. If you’re new to command lines, BTC is a chance to try them out.

BTC allows you to add, remove, list, start, and stop your torrents. You can list the files in your torrents and monitor their progress, download them on another computer, or, if they are media, stream them from anywhere.

You can also prompt an action for when a torrent is completed, such as having another program run or having your computer shutdown after a download. We find it very handy.

Some more advanced features allow you to filter and sort BTC results. This enables you to do more complex requests such as “remove all the completed torrents that are bigger than 1GB”, “stop torrents that download faster than a given speed”, “shutdown my computer when none of my torrents download anymore”, “download on my computer the three biggest torrents completed”, or “stream all the videos that are completed in my client right now.”

This is an open source project under MIT license, which means that you can contribute and add the features you like. You can also request a feature, if writing code isn’t your thing.

BTC is written in Python and works on Linux, Mac and Windows.

As of today, the µTorrent for Android app has been updated to include a WiFi-only option. You can get the free download or update here.

The new WiFi-only mode feature pauses download activity when you’re outside a WiFi area and automatically resumes downloading once WiFi is accessible again. This means you can download media without running up mobile data charges.

µTorrent for Android provides intelligent, on-the-go downloading. No size or speed caps on media files. It also includes RSS subscriptions that feature various independent artists (brought to you by BitTorrent).

A lot of you have been asking if there will be a native app for µTorrent on iOS and while we haven’t gotten to that just yet, we do have a way for you to easily receive the benefits of µTorrent Remote right from your iPhone or iPad. Think of it as anywhere access to µTorrent, where you can add/start/stop/monitor downloads, on the go.

To set µTorrent Remote on your iOS device, go to https://remote.utorrent.com with the mobile Safari browser and then click the “share” button on the bottom of the browser (where you normally add bookmarks). Then, choose “Add to Home Screen,” and you should get see the beautiful µTorrent icon on your iPhone or iPad. A while back we introduced µTorrent Remote for Android which allows users to manage their torrents from their phone. We received a lot of great feedback, but the most popular question was:  “When will a fully featured µTorrent Client be available for Android?”

For the past few months our engineers have been hard at work developing a mobile BitTorrent app that is worthy of the name “µTorrent.” In order to live up to our high standards, we knew that the app would need to be fast, lightweight, powerful and better than anything else currently on the market. After months of hard work (and copious amounts of coffee) we are proud to release µTorrent Beta for Android to the Google Play store.

µTorrent Beta for Android offers several features such as:

• Fast, easy on-the-go downloading of torrents
• No speed or size caps on downloads (mobile data limits still apply)
• RSS subscriptions
• Instant access to our growing library of featured content

Much like the inner-workings of the BitTorrent protocol, where the more seeders you have, the faster you’re able to download a file, Connectify gives you a faster connection as you add wireless networks. Their latest product, Dispatch, is especially useful for you. With each Internet connection you add, you can double and even triple the speed of your BitTorrent file transfers! To paraphrase: the more Internet connections you have, the faster you’ll go. This concept sounds familiar, huh?

If you like the idea of finding a solution to the occasional speed issue you’ve experienced (hint: it’s probably your wi-fi connection), here’s your solution. And you can help make it a reality by backing their Kickstarter campaign. Throw these guys a bone already.

Then, we will work with the individual who reported the vulnerability (only if they want to) for a public disclosure of the vulnerability and that person can claim the credit for helping us protect our users and, of course, for discovering the vulnerability.

Today we’re releasing a new prototype through BitTorrent Torque that makes it even easier for you to enjoy your favorite content. OneHash allows you to stream audio and video in the web, directly from a torrent swarm.

Take torrent information of any variety (torrent file, magnet link, info hash) and just put it after #. The site will start to download the content and let you watch or listen in your browser.

Take the DJ Shadow BitTorrent bundle, for example (definitely worth a listen). This is the url to the torrent file:

To listen using OneHash, just append the torrent information after #:

It’s very much a prototype, so there are still some kinks to be worked out as we’re still fine-tuning Torque’s streaming capabilities, and HTML5 video/audio support remains ever in flux, but its easy to see the potential here.

What happens when we get this stuff working as well as other streaming services? Will direct to fan experiments like Louis C.K.’s become the rule, instead of the exception? If you can stream from torrent swarms, the hosting/bandwidth costs that C.K. had to deal with will no longer exist.
